WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 3, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ announcement that an additional $453 million will be distributed nationwide through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP):
“At a time when Rhode Island continues to struggle with high unemployment, our low-income families are also faced with the discontinuation of unemployment insurance benefits, cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and rising costs of living. For some, these hardships could mean a choice between heating their homes and feeding their families – a decision no American should have to make. It has been a bitterly cold winter, and that choice could be a matter of life or death. I have been a strong voice in the effort to urge House Appropriators to restore funding to this critical program, on which 40,000 Rhode Islanders rely, and I am very pleased that HHS has decided to direct an additional $3 million their way.”
