Vitter Announces $128.5 Million Grant for Louisiana Housing Recovery

Metairie, La.) – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-La.) today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will award a $128,516,850 grant to the State of Louisiana’s Shelter at Home Program, which allows flood victims to stay in their homes while rebuilding instead of boarding in shelters or hotels.

“The thousand-year flooding this past August is already proving to be one of the worst natural disasters our state has faced, and it’s going to take a long time to rebuild and recover,” said Vitter. “It’s important for the flood victims who have lost their homes to find some normalcy. This grant will allow folks to return home and recover under their own roofs while we continue to rebuild our communities.”

The funding is being awarded to the Shelter at Home Program for families and victims of August’s flooding to make emergency repairs to their homes so that they can create livable conditions for shelter until final repairs are completed. The grant is authorized under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, which provides funding for most Federal disaster response efforts.

Vitter earlier this week voted to bring $500 million in disaster relief funds to Louisiana as part of the U.S. Senate’s continuing resolution (CR), which will offer funding for housing recovery efforts and other recovery needs. Click here to read more.
